Donate it.

Does your exPhone still work? Don't trash it —
instead, give it to someone who could really use it!

If you've been using your exPhone recently and are looking to upgrade or replace it, you're going to want to donate it to someone who can use it. There are a number of organizations who are set up to assist with this process and most often it's just a matter of wiping the memory and removing the SIM card and mailing it to a particular location.

We'll walk you through it and help you .

Recycle it.

Recycle IconYour exPhone is past it's prime, but it doesn't belong in the landfill. Recycle it!

According to the Science Museum, 1,712 mobile phones are upgraded every hour in the UK alone. We're swimming in obsolete phones and devices that most of us don't know what to do with. Well, fortunately it's easier and easier to do the right thing and make sure that your exPhone won't end up polluting any landfill.

The hardest part is picking donate whether to drop it off or donate mailing it in!

Let's start by removing your personal info (and your friends' phone numbers). »

The first step in ditching your exPhone is actually to clear all remnants of yourself from its memory banks. Why? For extra security, respect for you and your friends' privacy and, mostly, peace of mind.

Fortunately, it's not that hard:

  1. Terminate your service. If you've still got active service on your phone, you don't want a bill showing up after the phone is no longer in your possession, especially if someone starts using it! Talk to your service provider about terminating your account or setting up your account with your new phone.
  2. Shredder IconClear the phone's memory. You can usually find information online about how to do this, or you can use the Phone Data Eraser!
  3. Pull your SIM card. This step varies from phone to phone, but since your SIM card identifies you to the network and occassionally stores personal info like text messages and your address book, you should remove this from your phone and use it in your new one if possible.
